Fishmarket Venice

Paintings of Venice – The Fishmarket

Just above the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal is an area of Venice that is a world within a world. The Fishmarket bustles away with activity in it’s splendid building, still a hub of traditional commerce facing the grand palaces opposite.

The gondola crossing is in fact the ‘traghetto’, an unlikely ferry that dodges the vaporetti traffic passing and transports its passengers, usually standing upright. You can’t see in this painting but the capitals on the columns of the Fishmarket have fish heads, crabs and boats carved in.
