Paintings of Venice – The Fishmarket Just above the Rialto Bridge on the Grand Canal is an area of Venice that is a world within a world. The Fishmarket bustles away with activity in it’s splendid building, still a hub of traditional commerce facing the grand palaces opposite. The gondola crossing is in fact the ‘traghetto’, an unlikely ferry that dodges the vaporetti traffic passing and transports its passengers, usually standing upright. This is a canal view that is typical of Venice and at first glance could be anywhere. But it is at one corner of the campo (or square) of S.Giovanni and Paulo, an impressive set piece of theatre with a large equestrian statue and lots of cafe tables.
